Stamp your documents
A watermark marks a document's status at a glance: DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, SAMPLE, or your company name across every page. When you watermark pdf files with GroPDF, you type the text once and it's stamped diagonally across all pages — a simple, visible deterrent against casual misuse or confusion about a document's status.
How to add a watermark
- Drop your PDF onto the page. It never leaves your device.
- Type your watermark text — CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, your name, whatever fits.
- Tune the look: drag the opacity slider (lighter = subtler) and set the angle. Tick “Repeat across the page” for a tiled pattern.
- Apply and download. The watermark is baked into every page.
Tips for a professional result
- Keep opacity low. Around 20–30% is visible without making the underlying text hard to read. Higher opacity suits “DO NOT COPY”-style warnings.
- Short text works best. One or two words at 45° reads cleanly; long sentences get cramped and distracting.
- Watermark before sharing, not before editing. Add it as the last step — if you later edit or compress the file, do that first.
Honest limitations
A text watermark is a deterrent, not security: anyone determined can cover or crop it out of a page image. It also can't be selectively applied — every page gets stamped. If you need real access control, wait for our upcoming Protect PDF tool, which will add password encryption.
Watermark vs. header text
A watermark sits behind or across the page content at an angle — impossible to miss. That's different from a header like “Confidential” typed at the top of the page, which readers easily overlook. Use watermarks when the status must be unmistakable (drafts under review, samples sent to prospects); use Edit PDF to add subtle header text when you just want a quiet label.
Removing a watermark later
There's no “unwatermark” button — once stamped, it's part of the page. Always keep the original file. If you think you'll need a clean version later, watermark a copy, not your only master.
Steps at a glance
- Upload your PDF.
- Type your watermark text (e.g. your name, company, or 'DRAFT').
- Adjust size, opacity, rotation, and position; preview how it looks on the page.
- Apply and download the watermarked PDF.
Why watermark PDFs with GroPDF?
Watermarks serve as both branding and protection — a visible 'CONFIDENTIAL' or your logo discourages casual copying and makes the document's status clear. GroPDF renders the watermark onto each page as permanent content with a live preview, so you see exactly how subtle or bold it looks before committing. The 50% default opacity is a sensible starting point: visible without obscuring the text beneath.
Common use cases
- Stamping 'DRAFT' on a proposal so nobody mistakes it for the final version.
- Adding your business name to invoices or quotes as branding.
- Marking documents 'CONFIDENTIAL' before sharing with a limited group.
- Adding a copyright notice across portfolio pages.
Things to know
The watermark is applied as page content — it deters casual reuse but a determined person can still crop or cover it (no watermark is truly tamper-proof). Very long text at large sizes may overlap page content; the preview helps you find the right balance. This is a text watermark; for image/logo watermarks, check the tool's logo mode if available.
Frequently asked questions
Will the watermark obscure my document's text?
Not if you use the default 50% opacity — it sits visibly but transparently over the content. You can lower opacity further for a subtler effect or raise it for a bolder stamp.
Can I watermark only some pages?
The tool applies the watermark to all pages for consistency. If you need selective watermarking, split the PDF first, watermark the relevant part, then merge back.
Is the watermark removable?
It's baked into the page content when you download, so it can't be toggled off like a PDF annotation layer. That's what makes it reliable as a marking.
Can I use my logo instead of text?
The tool supports a logo/image mode alongside text mode — upload your logo image and it will be stamped on each page instead of text.
