Word documents, minus Word Beta
Need to share a .docx with someone who might not have Word — or lock in your formatting so it can't be accidentally edited? Converting word to pdf gives you a clean, universal file that looks the same everywhere. This tool is in beta: text and basic formatting convert reliably, but very complex layouts may simplify — details below.
How to convert Word to PDF
- Drop your .docx file onto the page. Rendering happens locally in your browser.
- Click convert. Your document's text and basic formatting are rendered to PDF pages.
- Download the PDF and give it a quick once-over.
Tips
- Stick to standard formatting. Headings, bold, italics, lists, and simple tables convert best. Exotic fonts fall back to standard ones.
- Check page breaks. Pagination can shift slightly versus Word — skim the PDF before sending it somewhere important.
- Need to go the other way? PDF to Word extracts text back into an editable document.
Beta limitations — please read
Only .docx files are supported (not the old .doc format). Complex layouts — text boxes, intricate multi-column designs, embedded charts, headers/footers with images — may render simplified or shift position. Custom fonts are replaced with standard ones. For straightforward documents (essays, reports, letters, resumes) the output is reliably good; for desktop-publishing-grade layouts, verify carefully.
Preparing your Word file
A little prep prevents surprises. Use standard fonts (or accept that custom ones will be substituted), keep margins reasonable so content doesn't crowd the page edges, and avoid floating text boxes — anchored, in-line images behave far more predictably. If your document has tracked changes, accept or reject them first; otherwise markup may render into the PDF. Finally, update fields like the table of contents before converting, since the PDF is a frozen snapshot.
When to use Word's own export instead
For mission-critical documents with complex layouts — a designed proposal, a thesis with cross-references — Word's built-in Save as PDF remains the most faithful option. GroPDF's converter shines for everyday documents where convenience beats pixel-perfection: no Office install, no account, instant result.
