Rescue data trapped in a PDF Beta
Bank statements, invoices, reports — so much tabular data arrives as PDF, where you can't sort, filter, or sum it. Converting pdf to excel extracts the text into an .xlsx spreadsheet with one sheet per PDF page, so you can finally work with the numbers. This tool is in beta: it extracts text lines into rows reliably, but complex table layouts need manual cleanup — read on.
How to convert PDF to Excel
- Drop your PDF onto the page. Extraction runs locally.
- Click convert. Text lines become spreadsheet rows, one sheet per page.
- Download the .xlsx and open it in Excel, Google Sheets, or LibreOffice.
Tips for usable spreadsheets
- Simple tables work best. Clean, single-line rows extract neatly; merged cells and multi-line wrapped text will need tidying.
- Numbers may arrive as text. In Excel, select the column and convert to numbers before summing — a 30-second fix.
- One page, one sheet. If your data spans pages, you'll consolidate the sheets yourself after download.

This is text-line extraction, not true table recognition: it doesn't detect column boundaries, so everything lands in rows that mirror the PDF's text order. Complex layouts, merged cells, and rotated text will need manual cleanup. Scanned PDFs contain no extractable text and will produce empty sheets. Think of it as a head start on data entry, not a finished spreadsheet.
Cleaning up after extraction
Plan a short cleanup pass: delete header and footer rows that repeated on every page, merge cells where multi-line text got split across rows, and convert number-looking text to actual numbers (in Excel: select the column, click the warning icon, “Convert to Number”). If dates came through as text, use Text to Columns to parse them properly. The extraction gives you structured raw material — fifteen minutes of tidying usually yields a fully working spreadsheet.
Dealing with multi-page tables
Since each PDF page becomes its own sheet, a table spanning pages needs reassembly: copy the sheets' data rows (skipping repeated headers) into one master sheet. It's manual but straightforward, and still vastly faster than retyping hundreds of rows.
